A very warm welcome to the 2017 Lund Conference on Earth System Governance!

The vision for this year’s conference is two-fold: on the scientific side, we want to use this as a key moment for the Earth System Governance community to reflect on the last decade and look to the future of the Earth System Governance project. We have a lot of exciting opportunities for engagement on what we have done, where we are coming from, and where we are heading. This is reflected in a number of harvesting initiatives and task force gatherings that will take place at the conference as well as roundtables and innovative sessions. We will also host an Early Career Researcher workshop and for the first time, a teaching workshop on “Innovative Methods for Teaching Earth System Governance”.

I am personally also looking forward to the paper sessions, which are the heart of the conference and offer the platform for members of the Earth System Governance network to share their work. We are very pleased with the high level of abstract contributions we have once again achieved and look forward to stimulating discussions. The conference theme of Allocation and Access in a Warming and Increasingly Unequal World speaks to the urgency for quality deliberations on how we, as the scientific community can contribute to the growing challenges of our time through our science, activism and policy engagement.

On the social side, this year’s conference takes place during the 350th anniversary of Lund University and we hope that conference participants will celebrate the university with us. We particularly want to emphasize the freedom of Lund, a small university town. We hope that the close proximity of everything and the ability to get to different venues easily will encourage social interaction as people organise to go for a walk in our Botanical Gardens, go for a Swedish fika at one of our excellent coffee shops or maybe something stronger at the many bars, and generally meet around the city with ease and at your own prerogative.

This is the second time that Lund University is hosting the Earth System Governance conference and we look forward to welcoming back old friends as well as creating a space for new meetings, collaborations and friendships.

Welcome!
